Information Security
Overview
Information technology and systems are a critical part of our individual, corporate and national infrastructure. The Certificate in Information Security is the first step in developing a cadre of skilled information security specialists and astute information security managers. Fourteen competency areas have been identified as part of the Information Technology essential body of knowledge and these areas are covered coherently in this program of study. This certificate program is designed to be further integrated into additional graduate study toward the Master of Science in Information Technology or the Master of Science in Computer Science.
Admission Criteria
This program is designed for students who have a solid background in Computer Science or Information Technology, either through formal study or professional experience.
Candidates admitted to the program must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.75 grade point average on a 4.0 scale from an accredited institution.
To apply for the program, candidates must submit a Graduate School application (www.hood.edu/graduate), official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended and a resume of work experience.
Program Requirements
This 15-credit program consists of the following courses:
Required Core Courses (9 credits)
- CSIT 555 Information System Security (prerequisite for other core courses)
- CSIT 532 Computer Forensics
- CSIT 534 Network and Internet Security
Electives (6 credits) — Choose two courses below from the choices below:
- CSIT 537 Encryption and Cryptology
- IT 521 Information Assurance and Risk Assessment
- IT 535 Security Policy, Ethics and Law

- Q: I already took some of the courses for the Security Certificate as part of my Master's degree program. Can I also count them towards a certificate?
- A: Yes, courses can count towards both the Security Certificate and your degree program. You can complete the certificate requirements before or after the degree requirements.
- Q: Do I need to be enrolled in a Master's program to work towards the Security Certificate.
- A: No, you do not need to be enrolled in a Master's program. You do need to be admitted to the graduate school and you will also need to complete or exempt the prerequisites for specific courses in the certificate program.
- Q: Is this program the same as the professional certificates such as CISSP?
- A: No, this program is not formal professional certification. It is an academic program authorized by the State of Maryland. Its goal is to provide a broad understanding of key topics in information security, not specific training. It does address all of the competency areas and provides a solid foundation for working in security areas.
