Essay Contest Winners

The Department of Computer Science & Information Technology at Hood College is proud to announce the winners of this year's Grace Hopper Annual Essay Competition. The purpose of the competition was to engage students in learning more about the life and achievements of Grace Hopper andto encourage interest in computr science.

The competition was open to all high school and junior high school students. Winners came from Walkersville HIgh School, MD; Urbana HIgh School MD; and Deep Run High School, Glen Allen, Virginia.

Cyber Blazers Competitions this semester

The Cyber Blazers Team will be sending teams to two different competitions this semester.
Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory Capture the Flag (MAGIC CTF)
National Cyber League (NCL)

For the Spring 2018 semester, Cyber Blazers will be training on Monday afternoons at 3:30pm. The team first meets at the CS Suite (HT 226) for a briefing and then going to the Cyber Lab.

Hood College Takes Computer Science Education Week to FCPS

To celebrate Computer Science Education Week, Hood College computer science faculty, along with undergraduate and graduate students, visited schools in the Frederick County Public School District to work with teachers and students during several Hour of Code school events Dec. 4-10. They taught more than 600 students in 23 classes, which included business, foundations of technology, introduction to computer science, Microsoft certification and AP computer science. The lessons served three purposes: expose students to coding to demystify the idea that coding is difficult or scary; teach computational thinking, or composing problems and forming step-by-step solutions; and help try to decrease the gender gap in computer science.

Technology meetups - Frederick Technology Meetup Groups

Python Frederick

The CS & IT Department is co-sponsoring and hosting several events for the local Frederick Technology meetup groups. Groups include Wordpress, Python, AWS (Amazon Web Services), KeyLUG (Linux Users Group) and Frederick Startup Community. Join them for some technologically inspired fun with like-minded people.

3rd Saturday Open Workshops-Combined Frederick Technology Groups
Several of the technology user groups in Frederick have gotten together to host a monthly open workshop every 3rd Saturday of each month. You can work on a common project selected for the day or bring your own project and enlist the help of others. Workshops meet at 10:00 AM in Coblentz Hall Seminar Room. Saturdays for spring semester are January 20, February 7, March 17, April 21, and May 19.
