Real World Experience: Internships & Jobs in Computing

Even before graduating, you can obtain valuable career experience through internships. An internship gives you a chance to learn more about the field and the organization and decide if this is a good career path. It also gives the organization a chance to learn about you—in many cases a successful internship can lead to an offer of a permanent job.

Hood Computer Science majors have internship and job opportunties open to them at many types of organizations, from large government agencies to small nonprofits; from national tech corporations to small entrepreneurial businesses.

In recent years, every CS major has found a suitable graduate school position or job placement by the end of the summer after graduaton, and usually sooner.

The internship has been like opening the biggest book I have ever read. It has shown me that no matter how smart you think you are, you are a small bean sprout when you hit the real world. Even if you have a 4.0 GPA or something.

We are located at the upper end of the I-270 Technology Corridor. The Corridor extends between Frederick, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. and hosts a large concentration of high-tech businesses and government agencies. Many government agencies, software development companies and consulting firms are a short drive from campus and offer internship opportunities for students, as well as regular employment after graduation.

This semester of internship experience has been a great lesson for me. I definitely have more confidence in my web design skills now. I am proud of my work and I am glad that I managed to impress many people despite still being a student and learning these skills.
